With 50 days until our next trip to Africa, I finally got through last years pictures fom our trip to Rwanda, the Masai Mara, and 1/2 mile into the Democratic Republic of the Congo. You can view the pictures here.

We retrieved our creations from last weeks glass class. We were trying to make bowls, Andy's (on the right) turned out more bowl-ish than mine.

Today we attempted a cone shape with a footed base. We're getting better at getting the bubble started, and nothing fell on the floor, so all in all it was a good day.

We're in our third week of the glass blowing class that we are taking through the Art Institute of Chicago. In week two we created our first "saveable" pieces. Andy's is the larger one on the left, and each took about an hour each to create.

You might notice a slight similarity to our first pottery attempts. Our instructor makes it look so easy, but simple things like getting the bubble started take us several attempts :) But still, we're blowing glass which is pretty darned impressive.

Yesterday we created two more pieces, Andy's is bowl-ish and mine is vase-ish, but they went into the oven when they were done so we won't see them until next week.

    Sunrise on Sunday

On the way to the airport this afternoon, I drove by the old environs to see if anything had changed since we moved to Chicago in 2000.

This is the house that we built in 1998-ish.

At the time it was a brand new subdivision and each lot had precisely 2 trees (except the giant elm on our lot which I was surprised to see was still alive). It's much greener now and no longer feels like home.

The farm on the corner, with the two cows that we nicknamed "brisket" and "roast" is gone, as is the dilapidated trailer across the street with the Rolls Royce in its carport. In their places are two sprawling strip malls with a Dairy Queen ("Chill and Grill"), a Smithfield's Chicken 'n Bar-b-Que, AND a restaurant called simply "Andy's" :)

Over in the Silverton neighborhood (where we lived before Prestonwood), you can no longer see our house because the spindly little tree in front is now giant.

    There's also a new upscale-ish strip-ish mall across from Sam's Club - with a Starbuck's and a Ruth Chris Steakhouse.

Some things remain the same - Ben's Bargain Barn at the intersection of Morrisville Parkway and Highway 54 is still in all its glory.

A picture every few days or so...

Well, there's also this, but more details on that to follow.
