6:06 am : Still dark. Fog or low clouds hang over the buildings along Michigan Avenue
6:39 am : The sun peeked over the horizon at 6:30, but there's usually better light when it is between or directly behind certain buildings.
7:09 am : The sun is on the South side of the Hancock building, bathing everything to the west in rays of filtered sunlight. Strange shadows of the buildings appear in the clouds.

Sheesh! You guys get up WAY too early for me! ;-) As usual, fantastic sunrise shots and of course what a view! If I look out my window I see the brick wall of the Tribune building. ;-) Do you do some HDR on some of these? PhotoMatix?
I use HDR when the scene requires a range of exposures to capture it. For example, here is the original of the hdr image shown above. And yes, I use Photomatix.
