After an eight hour minivan ride from Sabi Sands, we arrived at the Botswana border around 3pm yesterday, We checked out of South Africa and then boarded a “rickety old cable car” (very accurate description provided by our Mala Mala ranger) to cross the Limpopo River and then check in to Botswana. (video to follow when I have more than one bar of internet signal).
We were greeted by our Ranger who whisked us straight off to the evening game drive. We thought we’d be heading for the lodge, so we were dressed in our “sit in the car for a day” clothes and our camera gear was neatly packed away. We quickly unpacked some camera stuff and off we went. It was a good thing that we didn’t bail on the drive because, among other things, we got to see a leopard drag an impala up into a tree, and she had three little four month old cubs with her !
Mashatu has different terrain than Mala Mala – more rolling open spaces – and it is slightly cooler. With the cold temps, and the fact that we haven’t seen one bug during the entire trip, we’ve decided to bail on the queasy-inducing malaria meds (hence the title “off our meds”). Other than having to snuggle with a hot water bottle on the game drives, the cold isn’t too bothersome. Stay tuned for some absolutely adorable cub pics.
