Seriously Houston, what’s with the birds? Intersections have become downright creepy, each one featuring more feathered friends than the last. Maybe the lady who scatters birdseed at the intersection of 20th and Rutland has expanded her route?!? I know that we’re in the migration path, but it is January – which way are you headed?

Traveling over the Thanksgiving holiday is not ideal for many reasons. In addition to the limited dining options mentioned in the first post of this trip, there is also the inevitable holiday travel chaos. To avoid the crowds, we decided to travel ON Thanksgiving day, and return on Monday (instead of the day before Thanksgiving, returning on Sunday, which is when, oh, half of the country seems to...

Because we’d arrived so early the day before, we decided to sleep in a little. Yeah, alarm didn’t go off until 5am and we were on the road by 5:30. In retrospect, this cut it a little tight as we arrived at 6 and a lot of the good spots at the Flight Deck were already staked out by the monster-lensers.
We went to the very end of the Flight Deck and found a nice east-facing spot with a...

Woo hoo ! Vacation ! Time to sleep in, lay around all day – wait – that’s someone else’s vacation. WE were up at 4:30 and on the road by 5.
Bosque del Apache “opens” an hour before sunrise, so our goal was to be there around 5:30. When we arrived, we sat for a while, waiting to see which direction most folks were headed. We did a quick drive-through of the...

Bosque del Apache, located a half hour south of Socorro, which is a little over an hour south of Albuquerque, has been on our radar for a while as “good place to go to photograph birds.” Traveling over Thanksgiving is pretty much our tradition, but we are usually outside of the US so it isn’t a big deal. It is a little strange to travel within the US, for example, Socorro had...

I was able to make one more visit to High Island before, I assume, the end of the season. This time, I tried a new spot: Boy Scout Woods. There were lots of khaki-clad, binocular-toting birders there when I arrived so I thought that I might have stumbled upon another jackpot. Sadly, these birders were the type that like to sit around for hours and wait for that rare whatever-ma-callit. I saw a...

The good thing about Andy waking me up this morning at 5am is that I actually hunkered down and processed some Botswana images! At the end of June, 2009, we went on a mobile camping safari to Botswana. We’d spent some time in East Africa (Kenya and Tanzania in 2005, Rwanda and Kenya in 2006, and Kenya and Zanzibar in 2007) so this trip was a venture into territory unknown. Little did I know...
