The conference I attended was in Hersonissos, which is on
the north shore of Crete about 30 minutes from Heraklion.
We stayed at the Creta
Maris hotel, which is a large conference center located
right on the beach. The resort was composed on a main building
and hillsides full of white stucco bungalows, and bougainvillea
and flowers everywhere.
The beach was nice, but crowded. The water was perfect, and
cold enough to be a welcome rest from the blazing summer sun.
The hotel also had several pools, with plenty of thatched
umbrellas under which to hide from the blazing sun. Did I
mention it was hot? The hotel had a great breakfast buffet,
complete with recognizable food such as eggs, potatoes, and
ham. Because of the conference, there wasn't too much touring
time in Crete, but we did manage to see the Palace
of Knossos, and surrounding villages such as Old Hersonissos,
Piskopiano, and Koutouloufari.
